Bible Survey

Bible Survey

We are going to look at each book and how it fits within the Bible. It will be quick, where each book is covered in a maximum of two weeks. We will go through most books in a week.

Format

The format is different than sword sparring. There isn’t a 15 minute time limit, so you are free to take longer. Remember you are condensing an entire book one or two weeks, so even though you have more time, there won’t be enough to cover everything. Also, the time shouldn’t be spent trying to cover everything that happens in the book, the majority of time should still be in the scriptures. That is, you should pick a passage that does a good job of expressing the main theme of the book, and teach through that.

There are a minimum of three questions that should be answered in the study.

  • Who is the author
  • Where the book fits in the Bible historically?
  • How does this book present the gospel?

Purpose

The main purpose of this exercise is two fold. First it we will see how the Bible fits together. There is a main theme of the Bible and it is how God redeems mankind. We will see the gospel in every book. We will see the extraordinary lengths God goes to save man. From saving Israel over and over again, to sending Jesus to the Cross, to finally when Jesus returns as a king.

The second purpose is to again have more practice handling God’s word. Sword sparring was over small chunks, where we went verse by verse. Now we will study an entire book and pull out the most important bits. Although it is still handling God’s word, it is a completely different formant with a lot more choices on what passage to use. We are still getting practice and training, but with a different format.

Men, tomorrow morning we begin a good thing together as we consider the whole counsel of God’s Word, fixing our eyes upon Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith..
